Biscuit barrel in silver plate by James Deakin and Sons c1880
Tonight Auld Curiosities has much pleasure in offering what we believe to be a biscuit barrel, in silver plate with engraved Maidenhair Fern fronds and leaves. The oval shaped biscuit barrel sits on an attached tray, supported by four ball and claw feet, rising with straight sides to a close fitting lid topped by an organic creamy coloured bone/ivory grip and finial, which mimics the oval shape of the barrel. As can be seen in the photographs, this piece has been very well cared for and retains great lustre with the silver plate appearing intact except for some wear around the claw and ball feet. There was a suggestion that this piece was in fact a tea caddy, however I believe that the size is against it – though obviously willing to stand corrected. Made by the respected Sheffield firm of silversmiths and electroplaters James Deakin and Sons. The firm commenced operation in 1866 and stylistically this piece is likely to date to the 1880’s/early 1890’s (it would certainly precede 1897 when the company became a limited liability company. The biscuit barrel stands 6 ¾” (171mm) and is 7 5/8” (194mm) wide by 6 1/8” (155mm) deep.
