Carved Chinese wooden wedding basket in the shape of a lotus flower.
In the form of a lotus flower, the body of this carved wooden basket is finished in a red lacquer which symbolises good luck and great fortune while the lid has been coloured green with lighter “veined” effects. The classically tall handle is bamboo, otherwise the rest of the basket appears to be a light wood, really well carved and decorated in the style known as “Chinoiserie”. The floral design is no longer well delineated from the background, however it can be made out. This style of basket was often used to hold rice and were carried to the wedding couple. This style of basket appears to date to the 1800 – 1850 period and it is certainly more decorative than most that have been seen. The basket stands approximately 15” (380mm) tall to the top of the handle and has a maximum diameter of approximately 11 ½” (292mm). This is a pre-owned item of considerable age and being of wooden material it does show wear and there has been some cracking due to the wood shrinking. We have included a larger number of photographs than our normal but as always remain happy to take further images if requested,
