Large brass "Parex" syringe type pump
Tonight’s offering from Auld Curiosities is a large “Parex” brass syringe style pump which was sold to us as a stomach pump for humans who may need a washout following an overdose or similar. Now I did a bit of time in A&E’s and ED’s, even assisted with the odd stomach lavage, but never with something this size. S Maw and Son and Sons certainly made medical equipment but they also made a range of veterinarian equipment in their Aldersgate factory in London. I suggest that this is indeed a device for reaching to stomach, perhaps to empty the contents but also perhaps to introduce medications of something more the size of cattle or a horse. The pump can be seen disassembled in the second photograph and attention is drawing to the end of the push rod – rather than a leather gasket here is black tape wound round the spindle –suggesting the best practice avoid cross contamination was to use tape which could then be disposed of. The raised plate on the barrel can be dated to between 1901 and 1918. From end to end, the pump measures 18 3/4” (476.25mm) from handle to tip in the closed position,
