Late 18th century portrait brooch
White metal brooch with a hand painted image of a well-dressed woman of the late 18th century. The hat is dated to about the last quarter of the 18th century and is of a style that was worn in both England and France. The style of dress also supports a date around the mid 1770’s to 1800’s or so. There are no marks on the white metal frame so leaning toward continental silver or a non-silver metal. Whatever the metal is, it maintains a rather nice depth of shine and lifts the effect of the portrait really well, No artists signature is seen but the skill is very good indeed and the lady subject is presented in an attractive manner. The brooch has a safety chain fixed at the top and if the owner chose to make that the mounting point, a conversion to a necklace would seem possible. The brooch is 1 5/8” (41mm) deep and 1 5/16” (34mm) in width. Postage will be determined at point of sale and is a cost to the buyer. We do this to ensure that our charges are accurate and fair.
