Auld Curiosities is pleased to offer this Satsuma bowl from Japan. The exterior wall of the bowl is decorated with a rendition of a bough of the Cherry Blossom tree in full bloom – this appears twice, each on opposite sides of the bowl. The rim of the bowl has gold trim leading over to a small band of red and gold geometric patterning. The rim also has 5, evenly spaced indentations – these can be made out is the first 4 photographs, The interior of the bowl also has the bough of Cherry Blossom partially encapsulating a rural scene with mountains, forest, houses and a small river. This is all rendered in colour with generous use of gold outlining. As with satsuma pieces, the characteristic crazing is readily seen. The bowl measures 7” (178mm) in diameter, measured at the rim. The backstamp of “Satsuma Ware” points to a more modern piece (possibly Chinese) so the attraction here is the artistic merit only, so very much in the eye of the beholder.
