Silver brooch - NZ & South Seas Exhibition 1889-90
Auld Curiosities is pleased to offer, for your consideration, a silver brooch memento from the New Zealand South Seas Exhibition of 1889 – 90. To collectors of memorabilia, a silver brooch celebrating this renowned exhibition may well be a significant addition to a collection, but even to others, this is an interesting piece of jewellery. Made by the Australian firm of Stokes and Roberts, the face of the brooch features a view of the Entry Pavilion on each end and a central silver disc which carries the name and date of the exhibition. On the reverse it is the central disc which has the Entry to the exhibition and the outer discs carry carry an early version of our coat of arms. In their day, these type of exhibitions attracted world-wide interest and attendance. With this exhibition it is reputed to have been attended by over 625,000 in its 125 days and included exhibits from a large number of countries. The brooch measures 1 7/8" (48mm) in width and has a bar and ‘c’ clasp closure. Shows wear commensurate with age and use.
