Squat bulbous specimen vase by Ault Pottery, Swadlincote, Derbyshire

SKU: 8710355

For tonight’s offering, Auld Curiosities is pleased to present a bulbous specimen vase with a black ground broken by three representation of Columbine and one where is accompanied by Pierrot. This specimen vase comes from the Ault Pottery which is perhaps best known for an association with William Dresser who provided designs for the earthenware pottery from 1890 to 1900. William Ault was best known for his glazes which were often colourful, making this piece more out of the ordinary. The black ground has only a moderate gloss finish as do the figures and stars. The black ground has signs of wear especially at the high points, but given it is a century old, this is perhaps forgivable. . It is also worth noting that the decoration seems crudely finished - to the point where I had to check that the vase hadn't been repainted - but the glaze holds true. The Ault factory ceased as an entity in 1922 when it merged to form Ault and Tunnicliffe. The vase stands 4 ¾” (121mm) tall with a maximum diameter of approximately5” (127mm) and is estimated to have been created and hand decorated about 1900.
