Statue of St Philomena

Statue of St Philomena

SKU: 4090343

Auld Curiosities is pleased to bring forward, this statue, which we are advised is St Philomena (291AD to about 305AD), for your consideration. The statue features a barefooted young woman with the representation of a crown of roses and anchor at her side – these are common accompaniments in representations of St Philomena. The statue stands 13" (330mm) tall on a base with a diameter of 4” (102mm) and although it was identified as alabaster at time of acquisition, it is most likely a composite of alabaster dust and a fixing medium, so priced accordingly.

At the time of her death, Philomena was a consecrated virgin between the ages of 13 to 14. She had taken a vow of chastity before she accompanied her father, a Grecian King from Corfu, to Rome to plead for intervention that would stop the Emperor Diocletian from making war on Philomena’s family and their lands. The Emperor of Rome is reported to have fallen in love with Philomena and sought her hand in marriage. Her refusal led to her being subjected to a number of trials – being scrouged, tied to an anchor and thrown into deep water, and two occasions of being shot at by archers. On each of these trials she was saved by angels but the Roman Emperor then had her beheaded. There have been a number of miracles attributed to her but the Catholic Church is, at best, divided in the recognition of her sainthood. Where she is regarded as a saint her patronage is toward babies, infants and youth.
