Victorian style decorated metal tube with friction fitted endcaps

SKU: 9570160

It is with great pleasure that we offer this item for your consideration. This silver metal tube opens at both ends by means of push on caps, which retain good friction fitting. It may have been designed as part of a travellers toiletries set, as a toothbrush holder or similar, if so then the design and decoration suggest a Victorian era piece. The alternate would be that it was intended as a small document carrier for some important keepsake, and indeed it would serve that purpose just as well.

The decoration is dominated by elegant chasing work, with the design being defined by hammering the metal ground to create a raised pattern. There is a large cartouche which was probably intended to be engraved with the name or initials of the owner(s) – however this blank at present. The tube would comfortably fit a scroll (or indeed a toothbrush of 7” (178mm) in length and has an internal diameter of 1” (26mm). Despite careful examination, no hallmarks found so being sold as white metal. Condition is generally excellent but your attention is drawn to the last photograph in the series which shows some corrosive type damage to a small portion of one end cap centre. Postage will be determined at point of sale and is a cost to the buyer. We do this to ensure that our charges are accurate and fair.
