Vintage 1950's football themed mug by Dartmouth Pottery
Tonight it gives great pleasure to offer this pottery drinking mug decorated in an Association Football theme by Dartmouth Pottery. I believe this dates back to about the early 1950’s when Leo Lewis, and artist modeller joined the firm and developed designs for Coronation ware and moulded sporting mugs. Clearly the mug depicts a raised figure of a footballer striking the ball and rotating the mug to the right we see the ball arriving with force into the ‘auld onion bag’ or goal for those who haven’t heard a football game commentated by Tommy Smyth. The handle of the mug is also given special treatment, anchored at the lower join point with a football boot, the main length of the handle being corner flags and then nicely topped off with a referee’s whistle. All in all a nice piece of motto ware, standing 5” (127mm) tall on a base with a diameter of 4 5/8” (118mm). Condition is perfect (I can only believe that it has been kept in a china cupboard for most, if not all, of its life. 4 tiny peg marks on the base shoe the white slip beneath the hand decorated brown and amber glaze.

If for any reason you find an item does not match the description (written or photographic) please contact Auld Curiosities by email within 7 days of the item arriving, to arrange return and refund.
It was reported on 11th February that Dunedin has its first active case of Covid 19 in nearly 2 years. As Auld Curiosities is a contactless ecommerce business we have no major changes to make in terms of our selling items to you. We have for the last 2 years practiced good hygiene care both when unpacking purchased items and when preparing items for postage. There will be added attention to interpersonal contact but I am doubly vaccinated and ‘boosted’, wear a hospital grade mask in public and maintain good hygiene so hopefully there will not be too much discombobulation, if we can maintain the supply of items to offer customers.
Packaging and Postage
With every item we sell, it is our intention to take every possible care to have it delivered to you in the same condition as when it left our premises. For this reason, packaging is tailored to each item and provides the maximum protection that we consider the item requires. Any item that arrives in a damaged condition should be referred to your postal service in the first instance for assessment of their handling of the package. If satisfaction is still lacking then we will look to see whether our efforts have been inadequate for fair handling of an item and if it is found to be so we will refund the cost of the item. Postage has now become a major cost in ecommerce so we try to strike a balance that will not unduly add excessive cost to your purchase.
