Walker and Hall open salt
Walker and Hall is a name synonymous with excellence and innovative design, this offering captures both of those qualities. The open salt is a form of salt cellar dating back to the classical era with salt cellars being found in Greek and Roman culture. During this period and through to the Middle Ages, salt was a highly valued commodity and gave status to the dinner table commensurate with the amount and how it was displayed for sharing. The open salt on offer is a more modern style, dating to 1937. The metal outer is silver plate and finished in 8 panels, four slightly broader than the other four. The inner surface is finished as a smooth cylinder cut to hold the blue glass salt cellar There is an accompanying spoon but it is possible that this is not part of the original set as it bears no marks at all.
The cellar stands 1 17/32” (39mm) tall on a base with a diameter of 1 ¾” (44mm).This is a pre-owned item but is offered in extremely good condition. – light scratching in places to the metal container and spoon but the blue glass liner is perfect.
