Vintage cased set of 12 IBM Selectric type elements (typeball, golfball)

NZ$205.00

I was fortunate enough to be able to secure, what I think may appeal to the collector of typewriters. Certainly, this is a relatively recent addition to the typewriter stable that collectors will have, but of value as a vintage item regardless. These, chrome plated, plastic elements are housed in a solid wooden case with neatly fitting circular risers that each element is held on. The elements appear to have little use – the wear is hard to judge for a computer amateur like myself, but even under magnification the various letters, numbers and symbols appear sharp. The Selectric signaled a mover away from letters rising up to strike the strike the paper and was seen as revolutionary when released on the 31st July 1961. Of course, both the Selectric1 and the Selectric2 were supplanted by the early transition toward electronic data storage which IBM was again a front-runner in introducing the Selectric Composer in 1966 and the ‘Magnetic Tape Selectric Typewriter’ in 1969. All 12 of these type elements (more commonly referred to as golf balls or type balls) have 88 characters, so prior to the 1980 Selectric 3 which had 96 characters. The fitted wooden case measures 296mm in length, by 128mm wide and 63mm deep. The locking system is slightly difficult to lock, but doable.
