Dartmouth Pottery Football mug

NZ$55.00

A pottery drinking mug decorated in an Association Football theme by Dartmouth Pottery. I believe this dates back to about the early 1950’s when Leo Lewis, an artist modeller, joined the firm and developed designs for Coronation ware and moulded sporting mugs. Clearly the mug depicts a raised figure of a footballer striking the ball and rotating the mug to the right e see the ball arriving with force into the ‘auld onion bag’ or goal for those who haven’t heard a football game commentated but Tommy Smyth. The handle of the mug is also given special treatment, anchored at the lower join point with a football boot, the main length of the handle being corner flags and then nicely topped off with a referee’s whistle. All in all a nice piece of motto ware, standing 5” (127mm) tall on a base with a diameter of 4 5/8” (118mm). Condition is perfect (I can only believe that it has been kept in a china-cabinet for most, if not all, of its life). 4 tiny peg marks on the base show the white slip beneath the hand decorated brown and amber glaze.
