Antique “Kayser” copper art nouveau vase with brass highlights

In 1884 Johan Peter Kayser built a small foundry Kaiserswerth. By 1851 the family had moved to Krefeld near Dusseldorf, where they built a new tin foundry. Early production seems to have been limited to pewter good, often practical household goods. However by 1885, while the eldest son Jean, as the identified inheritor of the foundry, expanded the business to become “Leuconide und Metallwarenfabrik J.P. Kayser und Sohn” another son, Engelbert, built a private workshop/studio, associated to the major foundry, to concentrate on developing more artistic pieces in other metals. This was no doubt influence by the rise of the Jugendstil and art nouveau movement and used a range of copper, brass and pewter.

This offering is an example of Engelbert’s design work in copper – perfectly balanced with the more bulbous area filled elegant curves the as the vase narrows toward the neck the pattern narrows, becomes more angular until being topped by a brass-coloured button. I say coloured as there is no indication of brass and copper being brought together at this point. Pieces such as this are now quite rare as they were not produced in the same numbers as the pewter items and the backstamp was in use from 1890’s up until about 1910. The vase stands 190mm tall.
