Antique WMF brass vase – impressed peacock feather pattern
WMF or Wurttembergishe Metallwarenfabrik (founded in 1853 in Geislingen an der Steige.) is a name that grown in popularity over the years and a name that conjures up visions of Jugendstil and art nouveau beauty. This vase is a great representative of the style, as can be seen in the images. With swooping lines and an organic style of decoration. At some point in its long life, a previous owner has drilled a hole in the lower, receding panel just above the base. My impression is that this may have been done to insert an electric cord so the vase could be used as a lamp. Not a silly idea but just not to my taste, so the vase has stood with the hole to the back for the last 20 years of my ownership, however if the idea appeals to next owner – ‘have at it’ I guess. The vase stands 325mm tall on a base with a diameter of 135mm and has a maximum diameter of 172.5. The vase has 3 small dents – two on the rim of the vase mouth and one where the vase recedes toward the base – see images. The base is stamped with the running ostrich contained with the beehive – this backstamp with the bars running horizontally above and below the diamond with the ostrich contained, was used between 1903 and 1925.
As photographs form an important part of the description, happy to provide additional images if requested.
