Antique Pewter ¼ Gill bar measure
This is a nice example of this type of antique measure, generally used behind the bar to measure spirits. The stamped mark, issued when the measure was tested for accuracy by the appointed Government agency, contains a crown, and what I see as the letters ER for Edward VII Rex and what appears to be the year number of ’09. Edwards’ reign ran from 1901 to 1910 which puts the of '09 toward the end of the Edwardian era. There is also a stamped mark for the measure being ¼ Gill – these would have fallen out of favour when the lead content and its ability to be absorbed by the alcohol in the spirits. This is a pre-owned item, offered in unrestored condition which stands 50mm tall with a base diameter of 42mm. A ¼ gill is the equivalent of 1 ounces of alcohol.
