Antique, Victorian era Pewter ½ Gill bar measure

This pewter, cup shaped vessel would have been found behind a bar to measure spirits. The stamped mark, issued when the measure was tested for accuracy by the appointed Government agency, contains a crown, the letters VR for Victoria Regina and what appears to be the initials W.W. Victoria’s reign ran from 1837 to 1901 which gives us a date range for the measure. There is also a stamped mark for the measure being ½ Gill – these would have fallen out of favour when the lead content and its ability to be absorbed by the alcohol in the spirits. This is a pre-owned item, offered in unrestored condition which stands 62mm tall with a base diameter of 50mm. A ½ gill is the equivalent of 2 ounces of alcohol
