Art Nouveau era WMF copper, lidded wine jug
This is truly a work of art with all of the elements; warm copper tones, elegant shape and strong decoration, coming together in a symphony of perfection. This is another rare find to add to our wonderful range of items crafted in Gelsingen by the experts at WMF (Wurttemburgische Metalwarenfabrik). These craftsmen, some no doubt, from the early days when the factory was established, were at the leading edge of design not just for German Jugendstil, but for the whole art nouveau movement. The use of brass for the handle and the finial give a lift to what otherwise have been an overload of copper and design, while adding their own significant design element. The wine jug is tinned on the inside but while the coating looks good, Auld Curiosities would recommend having it re-tinned if being used for wine. Toward the base of the jug there are six panls of decoration representing grapes on the vine. The underside shows the WMF ostrich and rhombus beehive mark, which was introduced in 1909. The jug stands 280mm tall on a base with a diameter of 123mm. In superb pre-owned but remarkably well cared for condition.
