Military helmet carrier for Capt. Frank Mappin, 1st West Yorkshire Yeomanry.
This carrier has a fascinating history dating back to the Victorian era. The F Mappin indicated on the brass name plate is Frank Mappin, son of Frederick Mappin, a master cutler of considerable repute who also was a well-known local government figure, businessman and philanthropist in the Sheffield area He was knighted and awarded the title Baronet of Thornbury which passed to Frank in 1846 as the 2nd Baronet. Frank Mappin served in the 1st West Yorkshire Yeomanry, reaching the rank of captain and then honorary Major. On Frank’s death in 1920 the title of Baronet passed through other male family members until it reached Frank Crossly Jr who was the 6th Baronet of Thornbury until his death in 1975. At some point this helmet carrier by Hawkes and Co., military tailors and outfitters Made its way to New Zealand, probably via Frank Crossly Mappin who had moved here in 1908 and was a renowned orchardist, horticulturalist and philanthropist. So, history aside – the helmet carrier is sans helmet unfortunately, metal construction with a Jappaned finish which is showing its age. The coating has worn through in places and superficial rust discolouration can be seen inside and out. Auld Curiosities has not initiated any repair to this, or the broken locking flange, so the buyer can decide what they feel appropriate (see images). The carrier stands approx. 335mm tall (with the handle upright) on a base which measures 295mm by 207mm. This is baronacy #j
