Matched pair of Shaw & Copestake Ltd (early Sylvac) vase with nymph decoration
Auld Curiosities is pleased to offer, for your consideration, a truly attractive pair of small art deco era vases by Shaw and Copestake Ltd. The ‘Sylvan Works’ were founded in 1894 by William Shaw and his uncle William Copestake. Producing earthenware pottery, the partnership lasted 4 years before William Copestake retired and his place taken by Richard Hull. This and later changes in management brought the Falcon Pottery Works and Shaw and Copestake close together and in 1938 the name SylvaC was introduced. These vases have the ‘daisy’ backstamp which was used between 1925 and 1937, which fits were well with the choice of orange as the base colour and the depiction of fairies, nymphs and imps cavorting in a sylvan glade.
The decoration seems too exact to be hand painted alone but there are none of the usual grain effects that is seen with transfer prints, leading me to believe that a base transfer has been used as a guide for a final painted layer. The vases stand 4 ¾” (121mm) tall with a base diameter of 2 9/16” (65mm).
As photographs form an important part of the description, happy to provide additional images if requested. Please also take the time to check out our eclectic range of items being offered.
