Vintage traditional Arabic Dallah (Bedouin coffee pot)
A small version of the traditional coffee pot used to brew Qahwa, a bitter Arabic coffee served to welcome guests. The Dallah is commonly used on the Arabian Peninsula and also by tribesmen of the Bedouin nation. Dallah appear to have been in use for centuries and they form part of the ceremonial welcome of visitors and generosity As can be seen in the images, the base metal is copper with a coating of tin on the inside and the coating on the outside may well be silver, befitting the ceremonial importance of the Dallah. The internal tinning was used to prevent leaching of copper ions into the coffee, which over time, could lead to poisoning. The pot has all the hallmarks of being hand hammered, with vertical banding to add strength to the structure and provide an additional decorative element. There is what we believe is likely to be a maker’s mark on the base but we have been unable to decipher it. The lid opens readily and the pot stands 157mm to the top of the finial.
