Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Jug, circa 1891.
This tall tapering jug has an elegant line, with a frieze of roundels and leaf in a distinctive blue glazed band toward the top of the jug and a close ribbed design over the greater part of the body. The lid is self closing and appears to be pewter and presents as being in good original condition. The incised pattern number of 175 identifies this pattern as being one of the earliest and supports a date of around 1891 for the jug. There is also an incised ‘ha’ and scratched initials of the decorator – FJ (however I have been unable to identify these to a particular individual). The jug stands 8 7/8“ (225mm) tall, on base with a diameter of 3 15/16” (100mm). For a pre-owned, pre-used item, this jug is in excellent condition. There is some spots of discolouration in a couple of places, which appear to arise from the stoneware itself. Decorator’s initials of FJ are incised by hand in the base.
