Chintzware patterned trio by Elijah Cotton’s ‘Nelson Pottery’

Auld Curiosities is pleased to offer an “all over floral”(also known asChintzware) trio by the Nelson pottery created by Elijah Cotton in 1880. He outgrew the first premises - the Lichfield Works, and in 1885 opened Nelson Pottery. This trio is in the Marina pattern which was introduced in 1939. The backstamp on each of the three pieces also refers to the initials BCM – standing for British Commercial Monomarks – which is a device created by William Morris, not really related to the production of pottery as such. The idea was that people and businesses could have a unique letter/number identifier, prefixed BM and followed by the postcode. This was intended to work in conjunction with the British Post Office and was touted as a major growth area. The idea never really gained traction and now while it still exists, it has diversified to continue. The sandwich plate has a diameter of 6 5/8”168mm), the saucer a diameter of 5 ¾” (146mm) and the cup stands 2 ¾” (70mm) tall. Condition is excellent.
