Stunning antique mourning brooch from the mid to late 1800’s with Garnets
Early Victorian mourning brooch with 12 larger garnets and 24 smaller surrounding the closed central cavity that would hold the remembrance item. The metal frame has once been gilded or plated and a very good amount of that remains and the basic brass can be seen. That being said, the effect is not easily noticed with just small spots of the brass being seen in the back and this all speaks to age of this piece. The clear glass or crystal has a nicely chamfered edge and sits above the centre compartment, currently empty, but designed to hold a swatch of hair or similar, a reminder of a loved one that has passed on. Access to the compartment is via the hinged hatch on the underside. The pin is held by a simple C clasp with the pin extending past the brooch, consistent with the age of the piece, The brooch measures 28.85mm by 26.1mm with an approximated depth of 10mm including the fixing pin.
