Antique to vintage tobacco humidor made of coconut shell and wood
Given that the base of the coconut shell is supported by three tuskless elephant figures, as well as one as the finial on the lid, my original assumption was that this item originated in South-East Asia area. However, from the information I have been able to find the humidor is most often regarded as having come from Africa and on checking there is evidence of holes where ivory tusks have been removed, before coming into our possession. Auld Curiosities remains unsure where exactly in Africa the humidor originated and rather than confuse the issue, we will leave it the buyer to decide. The things we can tell you with confidence – the bowl of the humidor is coconut shell, as is he lid. The elephants and base are carved from the wood of the coconut tree. The lid has a layered effect with the intent to have the humidor become airtight when placed on top – age has probably caused a fraction of shrinkage so no guarantee that airtightness is still achieved. The humidor stands 230mm tall on a base with a diameter of 130mm.
