Parian ware bust of King George the 5th by Shelley Pottery Co.

NZ$80.00

Shelley Potteries started as Wileman and Co. which also traded as Foley Pottery. A decision was made to open a second factory, to produce the best fine bone china possible. This company adopted the name ‘Shelley’ in 1910, when it was taken over by Percy Shelley. Dates suggested as between 1910 and 1916, evidenced by the backstamp, and shows King George the Fifth in full military uniform, which suggests perhaps about the time of his coronation to the outbreak of WW1. The bust is ‘Parian ware’ which a type of bisque fired porcelain imitating marble, while the pedestal is glazed – giving a rather nice contrast. There is superb detail in the bust and the complete unit is free from damage – remarkable given the age and fragility of such a product The piece stands 121mm tall on a square base with a footing of 41mm per side
