Lidded pewter jug c1900 by W.W. Harrison and Co.

NZ$75.00

When tin, antimony and copper are mixed in just the right amount, pewter is created. A metal that doesn’t naturally shine like polished silver or gold but rather has a subtle warmth that draws the hand to touch it. This particular example is a lidded jug, made by the very well-respected W, W. Harrison and Co. at about the start of the 20th century. The lid has a very nice thumb-piece which has what we assess to be a porcelain insert as a heat protection. This is also seen in the very angular handle – keeping the handle cool to the hand. The angular handle also acts as a contrast to the bulbous form, giving overall balance to the piece. That balance is a little challenged by the bottom of the jug having been pushed upward slightly into the body – perhaps the result of frequent and vigorous use – a small repair can also be seen on the base.

The jug stands 7 ¼” (184mm) tall to the top of the finial and has a diameter of 4 ¼” (108mm), measured across the most bulbous part of the body. This has been a well-used, previously owned item and this shows in the small damages as outlined and minor bumps which attempts have been made to show in the photographs. Despite the flaws as outlined, this piece still has considerable appeal from the warm patina and the over all appearance.

As photographs form an important part of the description, happy to provide additional images if requested. Please also take the time to check out our eclectic range of items being offered.
