Antique bonbon dish, china inner and part oak barrel bound with brass, outer.
Antique bonbon dish in the shape of a part barrel, made of English Oak and brass banding (had previously plated with silver but this has worn off over the past 100 years or so). The interior of the basket holds a white glazed china or earthenware shallow dish which has a very clear back stamp identifying the manufacturer as Wiltshaw and Robinson. They used this back-stamp between 1894 and 1926 and it is often designated “the earlier crown mark” with a modified crown. There is also the logo of Carlton Ware quite correctly there, as the Wiltshaw and Robinson firm were the firm who created and made Carlton ware. The bonbon dish is 145mm wide, measured to the outside of the hinges of the part barrel and rises from a base with a diameter of 115mm. to a height of 57mm to the top of the brass binding on the barrel. Condition is excellent barring the absences of the silver plate that once was there – frankly the brass suits the oak wood better anyway – in my opinion.
