Open gallery Brass statue of an Italian wine seller mounted on a small marble plinth
Auld Curiosities is pleased to offer a bronze statue of an Italian wine-seller with his wine container, strapped to his shoulders, appearing to represent the face of the bell-tower of St Mark’s Basilica (Campanile di San Marco) in Venice’s main square – Piazza San Marco. The wine container top hinges back and was perhaps designed for toothpick, matches or similar. The seller has two pipes coming from the base of his wine container, suggesting that he was able to offer red or white wine and “glasses” which he seems able to fit into clips on the shoulder strap holding the container to his back. His style of dress appears that of late 19th to early 20th century. The weather-vane which sits atop the campanile is replaced by a flag rather than golden angel, which arguably would have been too difficult to do in miniature. Photographs to the end of the series show that the tower is hinged and folds back, providing a container for perhaps toothpicks, matches or whatever you choose.
