Open gallery Small alabaster statuette, by Gino Ruggeri in the style of 'Venus Italica'

NZ$55.00

Auld Curiosities is pleased to offer a Gino Ruggeri statuette, commonly regarded as being modelled on the famous “Venus Italica“ by Antonio Canova in the early 1800’s. These days this small sculpture seems to be more commonly known just as “Naked Lady”. Gino Ruggeri is one of the well-known Italian sculptors, who was born in Volterra – the home of Italian alabaster. He worked for years with Tito Bianchi and is credited with developing a resin and alabaster mix which gave greater stability and waterproofing to the material. It is thought that Ruggeri sculpted between the 1930’s and into the 1980’s, when he retired the Santini family obtained the rights of exclusive reproduction of all of Ruggeri’s works.

This piece, which is commonly referred to as the “Naked Lady” is priced as a later reproduction rather than an original carving. For all that we have tried to show that the figurine is well defined and retains good artistic merit. It stands on what appears to be a piece of Onyx marble and stands 8* (203mm) tall on a base 2 1/16” (52mm) square.

As photographs form an important part of the description, happy to provide additional images if requested. Please also take the time to check out our eclectic range of items being offered.
