Joseph S Sankey & Sons, Size 16 art nouveau era, solid copper tea caddy
The reputation for innovation and quality for this company spread well beyond Wolverhampton, Bilston, and even Britain itself. Founded in the early 1860’s, by Joseph Sankey an d the company made a range of metalware. It seems that various family and extended family came into the growing company. However, when Joseph died in 1886 the company appears to have foundered. In 1891 John Sankey went into business with his two younger brothers and they expanded the metalware business., mainly by absorbing smaller companies and diversifying. Using large steam presses the company made items ranging from baths, fry-pans, to holloware such as this tea-caddy. It really does seem quite minimalist in terms of the art nouveau era decoration, but none the less attractive. Stamped with the number 16, which I understand means the capacity is 16 ounces for loose tea. The caddy stands approximately 190mm tall on an oval base which has measures of 127mm by 98mm.The caddy is offered in original condition, show a great patina of age. I have seen caddy’s such as this, that have been polished and these can look great too
