1999 bronze/tombac oval medallion – no.4 in the Women in Art series

This is a commemorative medallion from the "Women in Art" series featuring, on the obverse, Eugene Delacroix's "Jewish Bride of Tangier", a 19th-century portrait of a bride in Tangier set within an arched, ornate border. The reverse features a detailed bas-relief reproduction of Delacroix's famous painting, "Jacob Wrestling with the Angel". The original masterpiece is a massive wall mural completed in 1861 for the Chapelle des Anges at the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. The composition contrasts the muscular, straining posture of Jacob with the calm, effortless power of the spiritual being. This battle is part of the Genesis chapter of the bible. The upper right-hand border features the title "Jacob and the Angel" inscribed in both English and Hebrew. Delacroix's name is inscribed in Hebrew along the bottom border. As an authentic piece, this medallion features a uniquely marked edge bearing the official State Emblem of Israel. The border includes the text "STATE OF ISRAEL" in both English and Hebrew alongside its unique serial tracking number (0134) and specific metal composition The medallion WAS available in various metals, including bronze tombac, silver and gold-plated versions minted by the Israel Coins and Medals Corp.
