Mid-century sterling silver and marcasite Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch
This is a tidy example of a post WW2 sweetheart badge featuring the Royal Air Force logo in blue enamel below the queen’s crown with red enamel trim, held aloft by wings. The wings are encrusted with (by my count) 58 marcasites in total. The practice of individualising a service badge into a broch or pendant, for a loved one left at home, appears to have gained traction. Some were converted by jewellers while others were made as a form of trench art during WW1 and WW2 – this example most likely comes from a jeweller’s hand. Has a good firm brooch pin and locking C clasp and a good solid loop to allow wearing as a pendant. The brooch is 48mm from wingtip to wingtip
