Antique, cased, Meerschaum, Baltic Amber and Sterling Silver cheroot holder
A frustrating but ultimately, I think, rewarding search for this attractive cheroot holder. We are likely looking at a product from the C.P.F. (Colossus Pipe Factory, S Mordant & Co., or WDC (William Demuth & Co). While the initials of all three seem to be at odds with what is stamped on the inner side of the case, it was not uncommon for the lid information to advertise the retailer’s initials and/or the mouthpiece size/shape. Cheroot holders date back to the mid19th century, however the hallmarks on the sterling silver collar date this piece more accurately to 1900 – 1902 with the silver makers being Eliza and Ben Wade of York Place in Leeds. Hey registered as silver makers in 1900 and the date stamp for this sliver collar is 1902. We happily confirm this is genuine Baltic Amber - a green/blue glow emiunates under UV light. The cheroot holder measures 77mm long and the case 98mm. As can be seen in the images, the case shows wear on the hinge and clip surface.
As photographs form an important part of the description, happy to provide additional images if requested. Please also take the time to check out our eclectic range of items being offered.
