Hiram Lodge 46 (Caversham, Dunedin) Centenary Medal

Masonic commemorative medal issued in 1983 to celebrate the centenary (100th anniversary) of The Hiram Lodge No. 46. The lodge was formed in Caversham, Dunedin, New Zealand in 1883 and the central bronze relief depicts a dynamic historical allegory with a stone-masonry scene, framed by a dark blue enamel border featuring the lodge's details and dates. It hangs from a brass suspension bar attached to a sky-blue moiré ribbon. According to AI, the Masonic allegory presented during the Master Mason degree, his death unfolds as follows: As the construction of Solomon's Temple neared completion, three disgruntled workmen (known in the ritual as the "Three Ruffians") conspired to force Hiram to reveal the secret passwords and handshakes of a Master Mason so they could get higher wages abroad. They cornered Hiram inside the temple during his noon prayers. Hiram resolutely refused to break his oath of secrecy, stating that those secrets could only be revealed through patience, merit, and proper time. When he refused to talk, each ruffian attacked him in turn using different building tools. The third ruffian struck him a fatal blow to the forehead with a heavy setting maul. The lodge remains active under the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. While it originally operated in the Dunedin suburb of Caversham, it now holds its regular meetings at the Dunedin Masonic Centre located at 43 Manor Place, Dunedin.
